If you run the numbers then it would happen roughly once every 40 years. With an average of 900 players per week, and the winner returning to defend the title 40 per cent of the time, that’s how long it ought to take for a player to win the Sunday Billion back-to-back.

That’s what makes the achievement of 3Double3D so impressive. With the Sunday Billion not much more than a year old, the American has pulled off a feat that you would be lucky to see in the span of ten Olympic Games. And he did it after playing the tournament just six times.

On April 19, PokerStars premier Play Money tournament featured a field of 874 players. 3Double3D had all the tourney chips and the 74M prize after four hours and 47 minutes of play. A week and five minutes later (the tourney ran slightly longer) there were another 842 players on the Rail and 3Double3D was another 74M chips richer.

In completing this remarkable double, 3Double3D joins two other players that have won the title on two occasions. His countrymen Jeffrey_P9 and Barry Greenstein (yes, the Team PokerStars Pro and poker legend) got there first, but neither can claim to have done it so efficiently.

There’s still work to be done though – Barry continues to hold a huge lead in the all-time Sunday Billion money list, and has the distinction of being the only player to have final tabled the event of four occasions.

A three-peat wouldn’t be enough to change either of those facts, even if it’s the kind of thing you would see once in many millennia. Even so, this Sunday, for possibly the only instance in our lifetimes, we’ll get to see someone try.
